Pick 6 Bet

A “Pick 6” horse bet is one of the longest shots in all of parimutuel wagering, so if you’re looking for the wager that you can retire after winning, it’s the Pick Six wager. The odds of hitting this type of bet are stacked way against you, so the payouts are huge.

What Is a Pick-Six Bet?

A Pick-6 wager requires you to pick the winning horse in 6 consecutive races. That’s no easy task, but the one bit of good news is you’re allowed to select multiple horses in any one race. The more horses you select for the wager, the more the bet’s going to cost you, though.

Pick 6 Horse Racing Betting Example

This lets you hedge somewhat on the horse races in which you aren’t quite so definite about the winner. For instance, if you have a horse in the 1st, 4th, and 5th races you feel pretty certain about, you might only select one horse in those races. If you have the field narrowed down to a pair of horses in the 2nd and 3rd races, you might bet on two horses in each of those. In the final race, you might hedge your bets and back 3 horses.

When it’s all said and done, you’re ticket will include bets on ten horses in six different races: 1-2-2-1-1-3. Each horse selected multiplies the base wager by a factor of one. At a track where $1 is the minimum bet, you’ll have to wager at least $10, or some higher multiple of 10. At a track where $2 is the minimum bet, you’ll be wagering a minimum of $20. Ask the clerk what the minimum bet on the Pick 6 wager is.

Pick 6 Wagering Odds

Spending ten or twenty dollars on a Pick 6 is a daunting proposition, since the odds of winning this bet are so low. If anything goes wrong in one of six different races, you lose. Many people pick one horse in each race for a $6 bet and look at a win a little bit like winning a lottery drawing. That being said, there are few bets more exciting at a horse track than when you’ve hit on the first 3 or 4 legs of a Pick Six wager.

Pick 6 Bet Winning Payouts

Pick-Six bets have been known to pay out in the millions of dollars. That’s a substantial amount, since most racetracks offer this bet every single day. In most cases, of course, the Pick-6 proposition only pays out in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

There’s a silver lining: you don’t have to hit all six picks to take home significant money in a Pick-6 bet. Many times, hitting on 5 of the 6 winning horses pays out tens of thousands of dollars.
