The second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown stops in at Fort Erie for the 80th edition of the Prince of Wales Stakes on Tuesday. Only seven horses are slated to run this year, but we do have the good fortune to see the Queen’s Plate winner move on to the Prince of Wales Stakes for the first time in five years.
All four previous winners opted to pass on the Prince of Wales Stakes after winning the first leg. Hopefully this brings some enthusiasm as Canadian racing fans have a chance to see someone make a serious run at the coveted Triple Crown title. Shaman Ghost is the horse to watch as the current favorite with betting odds of 7/5 and a Queen’s Place victory to his name.

The $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes will be run on a 1 and 3/16 mile dirt course. Since the inaugural race in 1929, six horse racing teams have managed to capture the Canadian Triple Crown title by taking first place in the Queen’s Plate, Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders’ Stakes in a single year. A horse named Wando last took the Canadian Triple Crown back in 2003.
Post Positions and Betting Odds
Fort Erie released the post positions last week and TwinSpires has published a list of morning line odds that it expects to see at race time.
Shaman Ghost and Danish Dynaformer are the clear favorites going in to tomorrow’s running. Both have experienced important victories in recent weeks and both are familiar to one another. Shaman Ghost has the edge in previous meetings, but the betting odds are very close.
Both horses ran in the Queen’s Plate on July 5th, where Danish Dynaformer was the favorite going in. Shaman Ghost overtook the favorite with a late push to score his fourth win in a row. Shaman Ghost also ran faster than Danish Dynaformer en route to winning the May 16th Marine Stakes.
Meanwhile, Danish Dynaformer logged his own win in the Plate Trial on June 14th. Tomorrow, they meet for a third time at Fort Erie.
