2018 Cambridgeshire Meeting Betting Odds and Picks to Win

The 2018 Cambridgeshire Meeting brings the focus back to Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course, and there are no fewer than 10 Class 1 races across the three-day festival. With multiple Group races to choose from, it wasn’t easy to decide on the three races to preview.

However, I’ve elected to choose the two Group 1 races on Saturday along with a fantastic Group 2 race on Friday. This festival is the last great Flat race meeting on the British racing calendar, so you can expect to see a litany of world-class horses.

Shadwell Joel Stakes

September 28

This Group 2 Flat race takes place over a distance of one mile and is one of the highlights of the second day. It is a relatively new event, having only been established in 1987. The Joel Stakes was originally called the Main Reef Stakes after a famous horse trained by Jim Joel, but it was given its current name in 1994 in honour of the trainer who died two years previously.

The race was cut to a mile from 1m 2f in 1989 and was initially a Listed event. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 2008 and became a Group 2 race in 2011. It is open to all horses aged 3yo+, and there are the usually fillies and mares’ allowances, plus Group winner penalties.

 Betting Trends and Information

There are 11 confirmed runners at the time of writing with Beat the Bank installed as 9/4 favourite. Mustashry is next at 11/4, and the rest of the field is 11/2+.

  • 17/21 winners finished in the top four in their previous race.
  • 20/21 winners were aged 3, 4, or 5.
  • Only 7/21 favourites have won the race, and 8/21 were not in the top three in the betting market.
  • 19/21 winners had 0-2 previous wins over the distance.
  • 21/21 winners had previously won over a max distance of between 7f and 1m 2f.

We also need to be looking at horses with a minimum of three runs this season, at least one season win, and one career Group win. The majority of winners also have an OR of 112+. With this in mind, it seems like a straight fight between the two favourites. Both were impressive in their recent Group 2 wins but Beat the Bank’s OR is five points higher than his rival which means he will be very hard to beat.

Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes

September 29

This Group 1 event is one of the most coveted races for 2yo fillies. With a prize fund of £275,000, the Cheveley Park Stakes is a lucrative affair and is a rapid-fire sprint over 6f. The race was established in 1899 and was dominated by jockey Sir Gordon Richards in the 20th century with nine wins. It is often classified as a good sounding board for horses likely to feature in the 1,000 Guineas the following season.

 Betting Trends and Information

There are 16 runners at the time of writing with Pretty Pollyanna the 6/5 favourite. Signora Cabello is next at 7/2 with the rest of the field 6/1+.

  • 16/21 winners finished in the top two in their previous race; three of the other five winners were having their first run.
  • 17/21 winners were in the top three in the betting market.
  • 18/21 winners last ran within 42 days of the race.
  • 21/21 winners had never run above 7f before.

Here we should strongly consider horses in good recent form here along with entrants with a minimum of one Group win and two season wins. Once we take all of the above into account, we are left with five contenders including the two favourites, Fairyland, So Perfect, and Queen of Bermuda. The latter’s win at the Firth of Clyde Stakes is probably not good enough form to win this race.

Although it is never wise to overlook Aidan O’Brien trained horses, it is hard to look beyond Pretty Pollyanna who had almost a length to spare over Signora Cabello in France; the latter has yet to win a 6f race.

Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes

September 29

This is another huge Group 1 race although its prize money is significantly lower than what’s on offer for the Cheveley Park Stakes. It is a 6f race open to 2yo colts and was established way back in 1866. The Middle Park Stakes only became restricted by gender in 1987.

From 2011 to 2015, the race was part of the Future Champions Day at Newmarket, but it was moved forward to this festival, and the winner now earns an automatic invite to the prestigious Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint. Occasionally, the best performers run in next season’s 2,000 Guineas.

Betting Trends and Information

Ten Sovereigns is the hot 8/11 favourite in this 13-runner contest. Jash is the second favourite at 5/1 with the rest of the field 8/1+.

  • 17/21 winners won their last race; 0/21 winners finished outside the top four in their previous race.
  • 18/21 winners had at least one win in a 6f race.
  • 21/21 winners had never run beyond 7f.
  • 20/21 winners had 2+ season runs.
  • 13/21 winners were in the top three in the betting market.

Aidan O’Brien’s favourite seems hard to oppose, but this is a race where the favourite doesn’t readily win. Even so, Ten Sovereigns already has a Group 3 win to his name while Jash’s wins have come in Class 4 company. A more likely contender comes in the form of Emaraaty Ana who is a Group 2 winner and surely represents value at 10/1.
