This weekend, all eyes turn to Louisville in anticipation of the 141st Run for the Roses. The 2015 Kentucky Derby is just three days away, the trainers are making their final preparations and the horses have put in their final workouts. All that’s left to do is prepare our bets and get ready for a big day of horse racing and sun.

Of the many horse races that run around the country each year, the Kentucky Derby is the one that attracts even the most casual of viewers. It’s the first leg of the Triple Crown where we become acquainted with the horses that have a chance to make history with a capture of the elusive Triple Crown title. You too can claim a piece of horse racing history with a bet on the Kentucky Derby. Best of all, you don’t even have to visit the track in person to do it.

Horse racing betting holds a unique place in the world of online gambling: it is actually legal in most states. Thanks to carve outs written into all major pieces of gambling legislation, licensed betting sites are able to offer real money wagers right here in the United States. This means you can sign up, place a bet and get paid all at a site hosted on US soil.

In my experience, the above Kentucky Derby betting sites represent the best the internet has to offer. BetAmerica and TwinSpires round out my top two favorites thanks to their status as licensed sites hosted here in the US.

All licensed sites have top notch reputations and will most definitely pay up if you win real money on the Derby. The only thing you need to do is place a winning bet – which is no guarantee. A single bet may be all you need, but I know many of us will be placing multiple wagers in hopes of cashing a winning ticket. The best horse racing sites for the Kentucky Derby are all happy to give you as much or as little action as you can handle.

Get Your Money Back if American Pharoah or Dortmund Win

In addition to the standard signup bonus, BetAmerica.com is hosting a special short-term promotion on Friday evening. If you place any WIN bets between 5PM and 6PM on Friday, May 1st and American Pharoah or Dortmund win, BetAmerica will refund your losing bet.

For example, place a bet on any other horse in the race and if American Pharoah takes 1st place, BetAmerica will refund your wager the next day.

Or, you could even place a bet on American Pharoah and if Dortmund wins, you’ll still be refunded.

This money-back offer extends to all wagers placed on Friday evening but the maximum total refund per person is $25. If your pick wins, you still get paid. If your pick loses thanks to American Pharoah or Dortmund, you get refunded. The main thing to keep in mind is this promotion only applies to wagers placed between 5 and 6 PM ET on Friday.

This promotion is the perfect opportunity for all you longshot players out there. If you want to take a chance on a big payout wager on an underdog, do it at BetAmerica.com on Friday evening.

Expert and Idiot Picks

This is the time of year when the experts and idiots alike step up and make their very public predictions known to all. On the expert side of things, we have opinions from John Asher, Jill Byrne, Ed DeRosa and James Scully posted at the official Kentucky Derby website. There, you’ll find their top 10 picks ranked in order according to each industry insider’s view of the landscape.

Here’s a quick summary of the top five picks based on the experts’ overall outlook:

  1. American Pharoah
  2. Dortmund
  3. Carpe Diem
  4. Frosted
  5. Mubtaahij

Meanwhile, we can head over to this page for a look at the predictions of SBNation’s resident idiot. It’s clear he knows something we don’t know with top notch betting advice such as this:

  • International Star
  • Strength: Built like a horse, exactly like a horse
  • Weakness: Poops wherever he pleases, even while racing. Discipline issue?

I don’t want to steal his whole gig, so go check out the full post. It’s great for a few chuckles.

Latest Kentucky Derby Odds (Updated Saturday at 12:25 PM)

Trainer Bob Baffert is in great position to make some noise in this year’s Kentucky Derby. He’s got two horses, American Pharoah and Dortmund, that are leading the pack with odds of 9:4 and 9:2 respectively. If you remember back to last year’s Run for the Roses, eventual winner California Chrome opened as a 5:2 favorite.

You can make a quick stop at BetAmerica.com for a look at the latest odds on the rest of the field as well. With Dortmund and American Pharoah sucking up a large chunk of this year’s advance betting, there are opportunities to score big on any of the remaining underdogs. Carpe Diem is currently sitting at 8/1 while the payouts on the rest of the field max out as high as 50:1.

Updated Scratch List as of 5/2/2015 12:05 PM

  • EL Kabeir
  • International Star
  • Stanford
  • Tale of Verve

Eighteen horses will take to the track for the 141st Kentucky Derby. International Star scratched earlier this morning with what may be an abscess in his front left foot. El Kabeir scratched yesterday with what appears to be a quarter or abscess.

Stanford scratched on Thursday, which made room for Frammento to enter the race. He’s currently sitting on odds of 50/1 at BetAmerica. Tale of Verve was considered eligible earlier this week, but the decision to scratch El Kabeir came too late to put Verve in the running.
